ShopPoetry.com: An Online Community and Blog about Poetry

Billings, Mont. (PRWEB) April 16, 2010 -- ShopPoetry.com (http://www.shoppoetry.com/), a blog about poetry, has launched a new online community as well as producing new web pages titled “Beat Poetry” and “Famous Poets.”

The online community introduced by ShopPoetry.com features a Message Board with sections that include a marketplace and a general discussion area. Posting on the Message Board is reserved for those with a membership, which is free to register for.

“Beat Poetry” examines this unique form of poetry that has its roots, according to ShopPoetry.com, in the Beat Generation. One poet praised for his work in beat poetry, Allen Ginsburg, published Howl in 1956, exposing his countercultural ideas about sex and drugs, the page states. “Beat Poetry” also describes the public outcry resulting from the publishing of Howl, but mentions that the poem and its publisher were defended by a 1957 court ruling.

“The earliest famous poets were the authors of epic poetry,” the page “Famous Poets” on ShopPoetry.com claims. Examples of poets who wrote epic poetry mentioned by ShopPoetry.com include Homer, author of The Odyssey, and Virgil, author of the Aeneid. The page also examines the popularity of lyric poetry, which has been made famous by poets like William Shakespeare and Emily Dickinson. The difference between lyric poetry and epic poetry is asserted when the page states that the latter is “narrative driven,” while the former “expresses personal thoughts and feelings.”
